Where should you start?

Visas, residence and work

If you are outside Spain: first identify why you are moving and the appropriate authorisation. Tourism, work, study and family residence follow different procedures; entering as a visitor does not replace permission to work.

Employment: review the applicable route with the employer and establish who submits the application. For self-employment, check the business project and authorisation requirements. Work-related evidence involves more than a contract.

If you already hold an authorisation: record its type, expiry and renewal or modification conditions. Check both the card expiry and the status of your permission in your file, especially before travelling.

The general legal reference is the current Immigration Regulation (Spanish). For requirements, fees and submission, select your procedure in the official migration information sheets (Spanish).

Arraigo and cases requiring individual review

If you are in Spain without a current authorisation, your time in the country, absences, previous status, family ties, work or training and the requirements of the particular route need to be checked. Municipal registration or a job offer does not itself grant residence.

Read our arraigo guides (Spanish) alongside the current law. If you have applied for international protection, received a refusal or a request for documents, the sequence of steps may change: keep the decisions and their dates. Do not withdraw one application merely to try another without checking the consequences.

Family, marriage and civil registration

Distinguish reunification sponsored by a foreign resident, residence for relatives of Spanish nationals and the rules for relatives of EU citizens. The sponsor’s nationality and permit, your relationship and each person’s location affect the route.

For marriage or registration of family events, request the specific checklist from the Civil Registry or the body handling your case. Birth, marriage, civil status, divorce, death, parentage or custody records may be relevant. Not every case needs every document.

Check the issuing registry in Bangladesh, consistent names, the appropriate authentication and translation. A statement of civil status does not automatically replace the certificate requested. Marriage does not automatically grant a residence authorisation.

Studying in Spain and using Bangladeshi qualifications

Academic admission and study authorisation are separate processes. Before paying tuition, check the institution, programme, dates, financial resources, health cover and where your situation allows you to apply.

For qualifications, distinguish admission, recognition of individual courses and homologación or equivalence. Ask the university, administration or professional body what recognition your intended use requires. An apostille authenticates a documentary formality; it does not make a qualification equivalent to a Spanish one.

Prepare the diploma, transcript and, where required, course descriptions or study workload. Your type of study authorisation also affects employment conditions: do not assume any course permits work.

Documents from Bangladesh: what you need and why

Birth and parentage

Check registration, names and dates. The official BDRIS verifier checks a birth record using the 17-digit registration number and date of birth. Verification is neither a newly issued certificate nor an apostille.

Marriage, divorce and death

Identify the relevant registry or authority and obtain the certificate or decision requested. Check the specific instructions before commissioning translation or authentication.

Passport and identity

Check validity, transliteration and consistency with your certificates. Consult the official e-passport portal and confirm the procedure from Spain with the competent mission.

Police clearance

A specific Police Clearance (Spain) service exists. Read the detailed application, apostille and submission guide; do not automatically substitute a general police certificate.

Academic qualifications

Request the correct document from the issuing institution or authority. Check any steps needed before apostille and the recognition process in Spain.

Powers of attorney and other documents

If someone will act on your behalf, confirm the power’s scope and form with the receiving body. An informal authorisation may be insufficient.

Apostille, translation and digital documents

The Apostille Convention entered into force for Bangladesh on 30 March 2025. The HCCH status table and notifications allow its application with Spain to be checked; do not extend this conclusion to every European country. Bangladesh’s designated authority is its Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Check whether the Convention covers the document and whether prior steps are required. Keep the digital original and check authenticity through the official e-Apostille portal. Do not automatically add consular legalisation to an apostilled document.

Before translation, ask which official translation the Spanish receiving body accepts, including apostille pages. English-language documents and apostilled documents may still need translation. Acceptable document age depends on the procedure: there is no single validity period for every document.

Padrón, NIE, TIE, healthcare and Social Security

Padrón: ask your local council what it accepts as evidence of identity and address. Municipal registration is not residence authorisation.

NIE and TIE: NIE is the identification number; TIE is the physical card. Check the decision and police instructions for fingerprints, fees and collection. Use our NIE/TIE guides (Spanish) and card collection guide (Spanish).

Healthcare and employment: check recognition of healthcare entitlement and the regional health card. A Social Security number, employment registration and permission to work are different matters. Before travelling with an expired card or a pending renewal, check which return documents may be required.

Spanish citizenship for Bangladeshis

The general rule is 10 years of lawful, continuous residence immediately before applying. Bangladeshi nationality of origin does not qualify for the general two-year reduction listed in Article 22 of the Civil Code (Spanish).

Personal circumstances may reduce the period: for example, five years for someone granted refugee status and one year in certain statutory cases. Having a Spanish relative does not automatically establish an exception.

Conduct, integration and supporting documents also matter. Read the citizenship by residence guide (Spanish) and document checklist (Spanish). The required residence period is not a processing time or a guarantee of approval.

Consular procedures from Spain

The Bangladesh Embassy in Madrid is the reference point for the relevant consular service. Before travelling, confirm appointments, jurisdiction, documents, current fees and whether attendance is required or a remote procedure is available.

Some consular pages could not be fully checked in this review. We therefore do not give a definitive checklist, fee or issue time for passports, certificates or powers of attorney.

Your preparation folder

  1. Identify the exact procedure, receiving body and deadline.
  2. Collect your passport and, where relevant, permit, card and previous decisions.
  3. Organise address, work, study or family evidence for the route chosen.
  4. Check names, dates and transliterations before issuing or translating certificates.
  5. Confirm issuance, apostille and translation separately.
  6. Keep applications, payment receipts, notifications and digital originals.

This folder helps prepare a review; the official checklist for your procedure determines what to submit. Do not order every document mentioned here if you do not need it.

Frequently asked questions

Must I hire help to start?

No. You can use the official sources and handle procedures that allow personal applications yourself. This guide is free.

Does every procedure require police clearance?

No. It depends on the procedure. Civil registration, passports and academic recognition have their own checklists.

Can I use the same documents for everything?

Not necessarily. Certificate type, acceptable age, authentication or translation may differ.

Do I need a legal consultation to obtain documents?

These are different services. Define the problem and scope first. A legal consultation is arranged only if you accept it.

Which procedure do you need help with?

Tell us the procedure, where you are and whether there is a deadline. Do not send passports, certificates or criminal-record details in the first contact. We will check whether we can help and, if appropriate, agree scope and a quotation before you contract a service.
